Hannes European champion, Kimeli and seniors silver!

Hannes European champion, Kimeli and seniors silver!

An excellent performance from our Belgian athletes on the European championship in Belgrade.  Pieter-Jan Hannes has won the titel in the category U21 and Isaac Kimili took the silver medal in the category of the juniors.  The seniors also did a good performance: 3 runners in the top ten and a silver medal with the team.

Hannes was clearly the best in Serbia.  He controlled the race perfectly.  In the end nobody could follow his acceleration and a couple of hundred meters before the finish he could already celebrate his victory.

Earlier that day Isaac Kimeli had already won the first Belgian medal on the European Championship.  He became second and won the silver medal in the category of the U21.  Kimili had finished two seconds slower than the Turkish athlete Ali Kaya.  Steven Casteele became 8th.

Jeroen D’Hoedt was very close to a medal in the category of the Seniors.  In a very exciting sprint for the bronze medal he got beaten by the British athlete Andy Vernon.  In addition to these results, the 8th place for Bashir Abdi and the 9th place of Koen Naert, made it possible for the Belgian team to bring the silver medal home in the ranking by countries.

The French athlete Sophie Duarte became European champion in the women’s race.  Almensh Belete and Veerle Dejaeghere, our two compatriots, where also at the start.  Belete finished in 6th place and Veerle Dejaeghere took the 17th place.
